Hello! Project / Jpop

Morning Musume releases the full PVs to Kono Chikyuu no Heiwa wo Honki de Negatterun da yo! / Kare to Issho ni Omise ga Shitai!

Morning Musume has released the PVs to their double-A-side single, Kono Chikyuu no Heiwa wo Honki de Negatterun da yo! / Kare to Issho ni Omise ga Shitai!.  Could they have made the title any longer?  Could they possibly regain my interest after releasing so much boring BS for the past however many singles?  Will Takahashi Ai’s last hurrah with the group be worth looking at?  Let’s find out…

Here’s the deal with Morning Musume for me.  I became a huge fan back when 5th generation was joining, and the type of material they released then, that I fell in love with, isn’t really what they are making now.  Morning Musume has gone through many style changes, like the huge change from mature harmonizing when it was just 1st and 2nd generation, to happy, fun and wacky with the arrivals of the 4th through 6th generations, which I loved the most.

My interest in the group waned with the arrival of the obnoxious and untalented “miracle” girl Koharu.  The only miracle there was that her tenure was short…   8th generation was a complete bore, and the material, while still good overall, had changed styles.

Over time, the vocals of one member, Takahashi Ai, have become the star.  I understand why, but they’ve changed the style of the songs to go with her style of vocals.  Some of the material was absolutely amazing, like Resonant Blue, but recently the songs have not been very good.

9th generation is here now, and they seem like they could breathe life back into this group that has gotten very tired – but they can’t do it if the material won’t let them!  I was excited at first for Maji Desu ka SKA, hoping for the return of fun Morning Musume, but the song didn’t really measure up, and then with Only You, we were right back to material that was crappy and forgettable that relied on the more mature stylings of a certain member.

Does this new single follow that trend, or break away from it?  Here are both videos on Youtube, one right after the other.  Let’s take a look, starting with the first one, Kono Chikyuu no Heiwa wo Honki de Negatterun da yo!

The song…. is still boring. Although I do like the disco-like sound in the verses, it’s not catchy enough in the refrain. I kinda want to keep the verses but make them redo the refrains completely.  As far as the vocals go, it’s very centered on Takahashi.  It’s her last single, so I don’t mind her being the star, but she can be the star of something interesting can’t she?

The PV is pretty good, though.  The space-disco theme is cool and it’s a lot better than the song is.  It’s like they finally remembered how to catch people’s interest with the video.  It actually makes the song better, so I fully approve of the direction they went with the video.  However, I’m still unlikely to want to listen to the song without the video.

The second A-side to this single, Kare to Issho ni Omise ga Shitai!, is definitely not in the same old style, though.  This one is more up-tempo and fun!

While Sayumi is an odd choice for lead on vocals, she really isn’t too bad.  The song is closer to the fun, happy style that I think will fit the group really well with the new girls.  I definitely like it more than the other A-side, but this song isn’t an A+ or anything.  Maybe a B.  It’s pretty good,  and I do see it as a step in the right direction.  It’s fun and is growing on me, little by little.

The PV is very eye-catching, with lots of bright colors…  But where’s the green? It’s a weird color pallete, with tons of orange, pink, yellow, and blue.   Pretty much every color but green on their outfits. Odd…

This PV is really, really fun, with colorful explosions in the background, wacky outfits, and an odd frame rate, making things a little stop-and-go.  It’s fun, silly, and definitely more of what I wanted Morning Musume to get back to.  Gaki fighting a cartoon Godzilla?  Yes, please!

I also loved how they tied both songs’ PVs together with the girls sleeping. Very nice touch.

Somehow I wonder if, with Takahashi’s departure, that the material will get better.  The second song, that did not focus on her as the star, was better.  Maybe, if they can’t just rely on her to carry the songs anymore, then they will give everyone else the chance to shine.  That’s something that this group needs right now, to get some new fans.  They’ve already lost a lot of the old ones.  I don’t want to give up on Morning Musume, I love the new girls and I’m excited for the 10th generation auditions.

These PVs were really good – we just need amazing songs again.  C’mon, Tsunku – write these girls some good material!  They’ve got so much potential, so don’t keep wasting it on stuff that’s boring!

^ This. It’ll be interesting to see how the vocal line up changes with her departure. But I have a feeling it will be Reina/Riho centric, with a little Gaki thrown on the side.

    • Yeah, I do think it might be mostly a Reina/Gaki/Riho lead for the next single, but I’m actually hoping for more of Mizuki, who has a gorgeous voice but is under-used so far.
